    Tulip Restaurant | Geelong

I just grab my camera when I go out for dinner. No flash or lighting. We were there early and there was some light left in the sky as the first course came out. I managed to take a couple of shots before the light faded completely.

New to Geelong | Not to photography

For years, I worked with major organisations across the region, documenting everything from dawn services to community events and personal considered portraits.

I am currently booking a limited number of local projects and am offering a preferential rate to build my portfolio within the Geelong community. Reach out to robert@robertslaterphotogaphy.com to discuss your event and how we can work together.

My focus was always on the same thing, delivering reliable, powerful imagery under pressure, often with tight deadlines for PR and marketing teams. it’s not always glamorous, but photo-documentation is an important part of the story.

Now, I have brought my family and my business to Geelong. I am looking to bring that same level of professionalism, reliability, and results to local organisations, charities, and businesses right here.

I understand what organisations truly need. They need a dependable partner who shows up on time and delivers. They need powerful assets for websites, annual reports, and marketing. They need a seamless process, from a brief to delivery.

Photography for Media & Marketing Teams

I don’t just take photos, I create visual assets. Having worked directly with SEO and media teams, I understand you need more than just a gallery of nice pictures. You need versatile, high resolution files built for digital and print use.

  • Photographing Art

    Photographing Art

    A slice of time

Often a photograph will have amazing resolution and perfect focus but will still fails to accurately represent the art in the artists mind. This is because art is viewed over time, from different angles and seen in different light and different times of the day . Photography is about capturing a very specific moment and freezing it. We can only ever hope to document one moment, one light and at one time. That is the limitation ( and challenge) of photography.

This is a 150mm drawing and shot on a modern Leica camera and lens. The resolution of this macro lens is 1:1 which allows incredible detail for small work.

    Sometimes you get lucky…

Kandinsky shot in ACMI in Melbourne during an exhibition.

Shot with galley lighting, hand held camera and from one sneaky shot.

I ended up with a 3000px image after I had corrected it for distortion and straightness.

    Delicious Donuts

This wasn’t a product shoot, or a food shoot. I was brought in to help with photographing the opening of a new service station.

While I was there they mentioned that they had a new product.. I had a choice. Nikon zoom or Leica 23mm Summicron. If I have a choice I will always pick the Summicron for the insanely sharp focus but idealy I would use a longer lens.

That is a great product and I could not resist going for a shot. The 23mm Leica Summicron is such an incredible lens that it allows you to do this sort of nonsense.

    2024//2025 camera gear

It’s been an exciting start of the year for me, diving into all sorts of fun events and gigs that keep me on my toes. I absolutely cherish my prime lenses—they’re like old friends— more about that later. As my projects ( (accidentally) grew in diversity, I realized the need for something with a lot more range. A super zoom lens was calling my name!

Leica, my go-to brand, doesn’t exactly play in the super zoom playground, and to be honest, their price tag would probably have me hosting a yard sale for my spare kidney even if they did. So, I ventured into Nikon territory. I’m now the owner of a Nikon D7200, sporting a nifty 18-140mm zoom lens. It may be a bit of a classic, but it’s got a 24Mpx sensor that’s just right for my needs—great quality without overwhelming my hard drives. What a fantastic little (big) addition to the gear shelf

    Leica Apo-Macro-Elmarit-Tl 60mm F/2.8

For my highly detailed photography of gorgeous things I needed something exceptional. It also shoots magnificent portraits of people

This lens is built to deliver exceptional performance. Designed for detailed close-up photography, it offers consistent, premium image quality at all focus distances. The apochromatic design of the lens effectively removes color distortions and chromatic aberrations, ensuring pure colors in your images. In addition, the inclusion of four aspherical elements minimizes spherical aberrations, enhancing the overall image clarity and precision.

    Leica Summicron-T 23mm f/2 ASPH Lens

I have had this lens for a few years now and it never ceases to amaze me. Gorgeous colors and accuracy to the edges. A Leica TL reference lens for incredible unobtrusive photography.

    The Leica CL

Out of production but absolutely not for sale. Leica just released the SL3 which may replace it. Eventually!

    Manfrotto Tripod

A new ( old) Manfrotto tripod is probably my most sensible buy since the last time I did a gear roundup in 2022. This makes my camera equipment rock steady for long exposure photos that often use in product shoots. It’s not exactly lightweight.

The OM1 with the 50mm Olympus Zuiko Lens

The fantastic Olympus OM1. won’t be in my hands much longer—my daughter has developed a passion for film photography, embracing her inner hipster. I won’t be going back to film on a regular basis.

    Uranium Glaze.

Ceramic glaze is a shiny coating applied to ceramics before firing. Uranium glaze is a type of ceramic glaze that contains uranium creating various colours and can emit a special glow under UV light. The radioactivity in uranium glazes is generally considered safe.

They were popular in the early to mid-20th century but are less common now. Antique ceramics with uranium glazes are sought after by collectors for their historical value and unique appearance.

This was shot using a 40 year old Zuiko Lens on a modern Leica CL digital camera. It was a fantastic lens in its time. Lens technology has moved on!
